This is the kick-off for our first season of events in the South Georgian Bay area! We're excited to welcome people of all ages, runners and hikers, novices and experienced navigators. Come out for a 1-hour map adventure exploring the forests and fields of The Len Gertler Memorial Loree Forest, perched above beautiful Georgian Bay.
The Len Gertler Memorial Loree Forest
COURSES AND CATEGORIES:
This is an individual event but participants with less experience who are registered for the same Course are welcome to go out together.
Participants will have up to 1 hour to find as many checkpoints as possible using the map provided. Checkpoints will have different point values so there is some strategy involved. You may find a pen and highlighter helpful. A compass is highly recommended but not mandatory if you can't obtain one. A limited number of loaner compasses will be available - first come, first served. This course is suitable for adults who are comfortable using maps in the outdoors and juniors with a strong navigation background.
Categories: Junior Women (Under 18), Junior Open (Under 18), Adult Women, Adult Open, Masters Women (50+), Masters Open (50+)
Participants will be given a map with numbered checkpoints to visit in sequence. All checkpoints will be along trails or in open areas. A compass is recommended but not mandatory. This course is suitable for children accompanied by parents or adult beginners. Distance is about 3.5 km.
Categories: Juniors (Under 18), Adults (18+)
A Participant's age for this event is their age on December 31, 2023.
Participants aged 12 and under must take part with an adult.
A parent accompanying a participating child does not need to register for the race separately but will be asked to complete a participant waiver for themselves and their child.
Children under age 6 may accompany a participating parent on the Novice course at no charge. The parent will need to sign a waiver on their child's behalf. Note that some younger hikers may find the Novice course distance too long.
FREE BASIC INTRODUCTORY CLINIC - *Clinic registration is now closed*
An hour before the race, we'll offer a mini-clinic to introduce newcomers to the skills they'll need to navigate with a map in this event. Bring your questions! A compass is highly recommended but not mandatory. This clinic will provide basic information to get participants started. For a more thorough introduction to the sport, we recommend the Dontgetlost Navigation 101 course.
If you are new to the sport or returning after a break, you may find the Learn Orienteering website useful. There's a lot of helpful information but you'll be off to a great start if you read the Orienteering Basics and Orienteering Maps pages, including the section on Orienteering Map Colours. Your map will have a legend and the Control Descriptions (Checkpoints) will be provided in English so you don't need to memorize the symbols.
Please register online in advance to reserve a map for your desired event. We won't be able to accept entries on the day of the event. **Note that registration closes on Thursday, April 27 at 11:59 pm.**
Before you participate in any Dontgetlost event, you'll need to sign our Waiver. It is valid for the remainder of 2023 for all events hosted by Dontgetlost Adventure Running in any region. A Parent or Guardian must sign the Waiver for any participant who will be under the age of 18 on the day of an event. Thank you!
