EVENT DESCRIPTION
Courses and Categories will be as per smaller Canada Cup events for the middle and the chase. The sprint will only have two options, long and short. Course lengths will be posted by mid October.
Saturday Morning ~ Middle Distance
The middle distance event will take place at Canterbury Hills Camp. At this time of the year, the area will be at its best and participants can expect open woods but also steep hillsides – the challenge will mainly be to find the best route choice. The area used is small and most courses will have a map flip.
Saturday Afternoon ~ Sprint
The sprint will be in downtown Hamilton, at Victoria Park. Two courses will be offered, long and short, with the difference between the courses being that the shorter course, aside from having a few hundred meters less distance, will have a less complex course layout (i.e. not as much criss-crossing). The park is flat, grassy with lots of trees and has some of the features expected to be found in a city park like a baseball diamond. Quick decision making and perfect execution will be the keys to success.
Sunday Morning ~ Chase Long
Time to return to the place where orienteering in Hamilton started, King’s Forest. The course lengths will be somewhere between middle and long distances. The format is chase. The fastest runner from Saturday’s middle distance on each course will start first and everyone else’s start time will be based on their time behind the winner. Runners who were more than 15 minutes behind the leader will mass start 15 minutes after the first runner.
Chase Q&A:
Q: What if I mispunched at the middle?
A: You will start 15 minutes after the first start with those who were 15 minutes, or further, behind.
Q: What if I didn’t run Saturday?
A: Same answer as above.
Q: I was 15 minutes behind the winner and my friend was 20 minutes behind on Saturday, it doesn’t seem fair we will start at the same time.
A: Not to worry. Your friend must beat you by 5 minutes on the chase to place ahead of you in the overall standings. We are doing the mass start so that everyone gets a little bit of a feel for running head-to-head with fellow competitors.
Q: So, who will be the Ontario Champions?
A: Whoever finishes first in each category at the chase.
Q: What if I ran really well at the sprint?
A: That’s awesome but start times for the chase are based on the middle results.
Q: This sounds like a lot of fun.
A: Not really a question but it will be a lot of fun.
